“Our production team (Angelos Kovotsos, director / Argyris Theos, producer & director of photography / Fotini Economopoulou, producer / Alexandros Sakellariou, sound engineer / Alexandros Stigas, assistant cameraman) has just wrapped the USA filming for the documentary “Once upon a time I reached America”, written and directed by Angelos Kovotsos.
For the needs of the film, dedicated to the great Greek folk guitar virtuoso Giorgos Katsaros-Theologitis, we visited areas from New York to Tarpon Springs Florida. We drove through five states covering 2,100 kilometers, in an effort to capture the perpetual movement of the artist who toured throughout his career until he passed, in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
This work attempts to shed light on the life and artistic career of the singer Giorgos Katsaros, and using his personal history and music as a vehicle to highlight unknown aspects of the history of Greek migration to the United States during the 20th century.
The choice of New York and Tarpon Springs is not accidental; it combines the artist’s personal journey from the point of him stepping foot in America, to the first steps of his artistic career, to his end up in Tarpon Springs, an essentially Greek village, a place where the Greek element still dominates today and where there are people who met the artist and recounted their experience from meeting him.
The documentary is under production and is scheduled to be launched early next year. For more photos visit our Facebook page: Smiling Sketches: Smiling Sketches
